Application: Small-scale evaluation of spray drying feasibility and testing of the unit for clients interested in the smallest spray dryer for their R&D applications.
Capacity: The evaporative capacity is 500-1000 g/h and the minimum feed requirement is a 50 ml solution and not less than 0.5 g of solids.
Specification: The drying chamber of the SDMicro
TM has a diameter of 200 mm, a cylindrical height of 350 mm, and a 60 degree conical bottom. The drying gas flow rate is 10-30 kg/h and the maximum inlet temperature is ~200°C.
The intrinsically safe operation makes the SDMICRO
TM suitable for use with nitrogen for products dissolved in organic solvents. The nitrogen is used as drying gas and is electrically heated. The drying gas enters the top of the drying chamber through a ceiling mounted gas distributor.
The feed is pumped to the two-fluid nozzle in the top of the chamber through silicone hoses by a pneumatically powered, peristaltic pump.
From the drying chamber, the particle-laden nitrogen flows through a cyclone for primary particle separation and then to a bag filter for secondary particle separation. The nitrogen is passed through a carbon filter after the bag filter to remove solvent before being released to the surroundings.
The cyclone may also be by-passed completely for collecting very fine powders in the bag filter.
When handling hazardous materials/potent drugs the SDMICRO
TM is placed in an insulator for personnel safety.
Computational Fluid Dynamics have been used to design the smallest possible spray drying chamber, which retain the same air flow pattern as a full scale production model. The resulting equipment can make test volumes of product at the smallest possible scale.
The SDMICRO
TM is easy to dismantle for simple cleaning and fast product switching.
